The Chihuahua Files
Welcome to the fascinating world of chihuahuas!
In fifth grade, I had goldfish. The results were disastrous. I forgot to feed them frequently, and my father ended up on tank-cleaning and fish-flushing duty, and it is hard to say who was more relieved when the last fish finally died.
At age 23, I decided that I needed a dog. The first dog list I joined happened to be about chihuahuas, and after months of listening in on their conversations, I decided a chihuahua was the dog I needed.
Joining this list made me realize that buying from a pet shop was bad, so after Chris and I bought a house, we bought Paco and Pedro in July of 2000 from a breeder. We didn’t know know enough about dogs (as neither of us had ever had dogs before) but after living with Paco and Pedro for a few months, eventually we realized that this was a bad breeder.
So when we went looking for another chi, we went to a local shelter and after many months, found Mina. Mina is a sato from Puerto Rico, and we think she is half chi, half min pin.
Pedro died suddenly on May 23, 2001. We love and miss him very much.
Flacko was a stray who was brought into Cold Nose Warm Heart Chihuahua Rescue at about a year old. After nearly a year in rescue, he came to us to be fostered for 8 months. We permanently adopted him in September of 2002, and changed his name to Stanley in 2006 when we finally realized “Flacko” and “Paco” sound too similar.
